Keeping Canada geese off one’s property is a challenge many homeowners have faced, but there are effective solutions out there. Here are a few non-lethal repellent methods that have proven themselves to be effective, plus a little bit about how they work.
Repellent Odors
While these geese do not have what we may consider a sense of smell, the mucous membranes in their nostrils are sensitive to certain non-toxic repellents. By applying these in the target area, you can discourage Canada geese from approaching and settling there.
Food-Aversion Tactics
This repellent tactic involves coating the feeding area that the geese favor with a non-toxic substance that tastes so bad to the birds that they stay away from the area altogether. This is a method that isn’t as effective as the rest mentioned here, perhaps because the birds simply get used to it, but it may be improved upon in the future.
Balloons
Balloons re a surprisingly effective repellent. They are used interchangeably with flapping plastic bags. The reason behind their effectiveness is that these geese hate being disturbed, and so whatever creates distracting noise or movement works well to keep them away. What we’re talking about is basically a scarecrow for geese, meaning it can be quite easily set up and deployed by individual homeowners at little cost.
Sonic Repellents
These refer to repellent systems based on creating sounds to drive and keep geese away. Sonic repellents work by emitting ultra-sonic sounds on a frequency which human beings cannot hear but which are highly irritating to geese. The sounds are simply a warning note in the ears of the geese, telling them to get out of the area. They are considered ideal for large, wide, open spaces like golf courses or parks rather than small homesteads. One sticking point when it comes to these devices is their price, which ranges anywhere from a few dollars to thousands of dollars.
